Upgrading the RAM and SSD in my Dell Inspiron Micro 3050 Desktop

My main reason for purchasing the Dell 3050 was to move my Plex server from my larger Photoshop desktop computer to a small form factor.  I looked at the Intel Nuc and the Gigabyte Brix but the Dell 3050 with the Intel Pentium provided the best value. I selected the Pentium over the Celeron for better performance. The downside was the 2GB RAM and the 32 GB SSD. Dell does have a model with a 500GB HD at a higher cost.  I would rather use the extra money to purchase the RAM and the larger SSD.  Feel free to use the comments section to ask any question you may have

For those who want to install a 2.5 drive in place of the SSD you will need to purchase a special sata cable in order connect the sata port on the drive.  Based on my search of the Internet, Dell does not sell the cable separately. The cable only comes with the Dell 3050 with the 500GB Hard Drive.

You can purchase a HP cable and modify it.  Look for part number 6017B0421501

*** Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any damage you may cause to your Dell Insprion 3050 Micro Desktop ****

Now that I have the disclaimer out of the way, I will get to my upgrades.

Itemized list of items used for my upgrades
Upgrade One: RAM Upgrade
The easiest upgrade for the 3050 is the RAM.  Max supported is 8GB so I bought a Crucial 8GB 1600L DDR3.  This Upgrade will run $30 to $35 dollars.  Crucial 8GB at Amazon

Opening the case
  1. With your screwdriver remove the four screws from the bottom on the Micro 3050
  2. If the outside case does not drop off use the screwdriver push the case off through the holes from which you removed the screws.
  3. Once opened, you can simply replace the RAM by using the two tabs on each side of the RAM and pop the RAM right out
  4. If you are only upgrading the RAM, you can slide the case back on and reassemble by screwing the four screws.

Upgrade Two: SSD Upgrade
You want to ensure you are using the proper form factor when it comes to upgrading the SSD.  Here is what to look for.
  1. M.2 Sata Connector. (Not PCIe)
  2. 2242 (22mm x 42mm)
During my research and discovery there are not many brands to choose from in this form factor. From what I read and seen a majority of people who are upgrading are buying MyDigitalSSD brand. I went with the Adata brand because of the performance that was reported on various sites and the price. From what I read the Transcend brand had the best performance but the cost is a little more. Upgrade costs $85 for the 256GB SSD and $21 for the external M.2 Case.

Transferring the current SSD to new SSD

Prior to cloning the drive, I would recommend you have at least to 2GB of free space on the current SSD. For this step there were two items I used.
  1. Installing the New SSD into the case.
    1. Open the case by using the sliding door.
    2. Remove the screw from the inside
    3. Install the new SSD and screw it down
    4. Reattach the sliding door.
  2. Installing Macrium Reflect Free
    1. Download the software from their website
    2. Run the installer
    3. An Additional ~550MB PE file will be downloaded
    4. Once the Install has completed, insert the External SSD case into the USB 3.0 port on the Micro 3050.
  3. Cloning the SSD
    1. Open the Macrium Reflect software
      1. You will see the option to clone at this point I cloned the whole drive re-ordering the drives but because I did, I had to use the partition software to move the recovery drive in order to expand the OS partition.
        1. You can avoid the partition software if you use the drag and drop method as described in one of Macrium's KB
          1. I am including the instructions for partition software if prefer to clone the whole drive as is below
          2. I have not verified this method works but have no reason to doubt that it will work.
    2. Click on the clone this disk
    3. Select destination disk (the new SSD)
      1. At this point you can change order / size
    4. If you are not changing the order / size click Next
    5. You will need to click a couple more times from the process to start.
    6. Total clone time me was just under 8 Minutes.
** Macrium KB Article on the Cloning Process **

Installing the new SSD in the 3050
If not already done so, open your Dell 3050 case.
  1. Remove the four internal silver screws to remove the two hard brackets and this will allow you access to the SSD.
  2. Carefully open the motherboard from the case. (There is no need to removed Wifi cables)
  3. Slightly push the plastic piece holding the SSD in place back to remove the SSD.
  4. Insert the new SSD and snap in to place.
  5. Flip the motherboard and case back together
  6. Screw the brackets back
  7. Screw the case back on.
  8. Power back and enjoy your larger SSD if you did the re-sizing with Macrium

Optional Partition Software
(Only applies if you need to move the recovery partition to expand the OS Partition)
You will need a third party partition program, if you launch Windows Disk Management and are unable to expand the OS partition because the free space is on the other side of the recovery partition.

Windows does not have native support to move a partition.

The program I downloaded was EaseUS Partition Master Free.
  1. Install the program (I recommend to uncheck the backup software that will try to install
  2. Launch the application.
  3. Mouse over the recovery partition until are able to grab it and move it to the right of the free space partition
  4. Once moved, expand the OS Partition
  5. Apply the changes, the computer will restart to complete the change.

After the reboot, I had 210GB Free.

210 GB Free

I am using and external portable hard drive to store my videos / music / photos.  I have the Plex Server point to the folders on the portable drive.

Other Important Information if you do not want to use a monitor and keyboard with the Dell 3050

From Dell Support: Using the Inspiron 3050 Micro Desktop as a headless system.

You may want to use the Inspiron 3050 without a keyboard, monitor or other peripherals attached. It has been reported that this system may not complete boot without these devices connected to the system. In order to resolve this issue you need to disable Secure Boot and ensure UEFI is enabled. Follow these steps to make those changes. You will use the left, right, up, and down arrows and the Enter key to select options in the BIOS.

  1. Restart the system and access the BIOS by pressing F2 during startup.
  2. Select the Boot tab.
  3. Ensure UEFI is listed for Boot List Option at the top.
  4. Select Secure Boot then Disabled.
  5. Select the Exit tab then Save Changes and Reset.

  2. Long story short... I got a 256GB Transcend SSD to work. I kept getting errors in PM when trying to expand the OS partition on the SSD. Ultimately, I had to modify my process. On another PC, I created a VHD, slightly smaller than the new SSD. I then restored a Macrium backup I had made of the 32GB SSD, to the VHD. I dragged the partitions I wanted in the order I wanted (OS partition last). Then used EaseUS PM to expand the OS partition. Ran Macrium again to create a backup image of the newly modified 256GB VHD. Then restored that image to the 256GB SSD. Installed it into the 3050, and boom! Works like a charm. Ran PM again to expand the OS partition out to the max. There was just a few hundred MB of unallocated space at the end. All is well now!

  3. I should clarify something... BEFORE I installed the SSD into the 3050, I expanded the OS partition with EaseUS Partition Manager, while the SSD was still mounted in the USB/SSD bridge adapter, and attached to another PC. Early on, I was getting errors in PM with the SSD installed in the 3050. So, I thought it best to do all of the manipulation of the SSD, somewhere other than the 3050. Which worked for me.

  5. After your experiences upgrading the m.2 SSD which brand m.2 2242 SSD would you recommend? transcend, adata, or Mydigital? (OEM was Samsung 32gb)

  6. Just did my M.2 SSD upgrade w/0 any probems.
    I used:
Apricorn SATA wire Cable notebook harddrive kit - $20 Amazon
AD905A SATA III 3 to M.2 (NGFF) SSD 7+5 pin Connector Converter Adapter Card - $10 Amazon
    Transcend 128GB SATA III 6Gb/s MTS400 42 mm M.2 SSD -$52 Amazon

I used windows 10 disk mgr to tee up the new SSd, then I justs used the EZ gig software to close the Samsung 32GTB SSD to the Transcend - easily done, just followed the simple direction path the EZ Gig software recommended.

    The only challenges were:
Opening up the motherboard carefull not to yank out any cables
Getting the plastic tab pried open to release the old SSD - gently does it!

Good luck to the rest of you!

  7. Silly question perhaps; but do these come with Windows 32-bit or 64-bit. Seems a bit silly to upgrade to 8 gb if the former (I know all these processors are full 64-bit, but the bundled Windows is almost always 32-bit in my experience - no such problems with Linux though).

  8. I just bought one of these on Black Friday for $99, please don't ever remove this page! I had just ordered the Crucial 8gb ram from Amazon the day before finding this site, next will be to upgrade the hard drive, I need to read more on how to copy the info over from the 32gb to a new drive. So far I really like this little computer for my plex and kodi setup on the master bedroom tv, I am using a Logitech K400R keyboard with a mousepad built in, love it!

  9. I had an idea not sure if this would work, but could I hook up a basic usb external via usb, clone the 32gb ssd to that external usb hard drive.

Shut down and remove the internal 32gb ssd, replace it with a 128 or 256 ssd, then (if it allows) via bios boot from the usb external cloned image then clone that to the blank ssd in the machine?

I guess it is easier if you have the usb case that the ssd can slide into I just don't have one and would probably never use it for anything but this one move.

    1. USB case is cheap and a lot time is free after rebate, just got one from Newegg last week FAR. They are useful as you upgrade to a bigger SSD, just pop in the smaller SSD, you got a SSD external drive.

    2. I will have to do some google searches, seems most I see are in the $20 range no rebates bad timing I guess, I just wasn't sure if I could clone to a external normal drive, then put the new larger ssd in, boot the 3050 from usb to move the OS back onto the new ssd, seems a bit indirect vs the usb case but a free option (just not sure if it would work). Will start looking for a usb case though with a deal, would be handy to stick the 32gb in for quick storage I guess too!

  11. So far all I have on my 3050 is windows 10, firefox and avast, today windows is saying it wants to do an update but there isn't enough room, humm maybe it's time to just bite the bullet and at least do the 128 if not the 256 ssd.

    1. Decided to just compromise due to costs on the 128 vs the 256 for $52

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KLTPUU0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That should give me headroom for some basic programs windows updates etc, the majority of my needs on this will be thru plex which is all served off my nas drive anyways.

Also picked up a usb to m.2 adapter on amazon for $13,

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FUDHHLQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

so "hopefully" I will get it all working once it arrives.

  12. What is the optimal partition size when cloning?
Fat 32 (leave at 500 MB?), Unformatted Primary (Leave at 128MB?), NTFS Primary OS (Expand to Max?) NTFS Primary WINRETOOLS - Leave at 450 MB?)

    ReplyDelete
  13. I did a drag and drop of the drive and left everything as is except the primary I opened to max space obviously via the method explained above. So far no issues but I didn't expand anything but the primary to allow for more space from 32gb to 128gb drive, I think my primary c is now something like 109gb after everything else factored in.

  14. I completed the clone. At first it looked good, but I've found at least Office 2016 and McAfee don't work any more. I think they must recognize that it is a clone. I'm going to try uninstalling from the original SSD and then re-cloning. Hopefully that fixes it.

  15. My question is why not leave the 32GB that came with the unit alone and simply add an extra SSD. I happen to have several around so that's what I had planned to do. On the atxgeek sight, it is confirmed by several posters that the 3050 does support two hard drives. Am I missing anything? I have ordered the special HP Envy cable for the new SSD.

  16. Can anybody confirm what brand ssd they got originally? I ordered mine on BF and the built list has an Samsung CM851 ssd, but mine came with sk hynix ssd. This ssd seems really slow like sata 2 slow. CrystalDisk Info shows as sata300 as current mode and sata600 as supported mode.
Also, there seems to be 2 sets of holes that could hold black plastic that hold ssd in place. 1 at 42mm mark and another at 60mm. I'm thinking to get a 2260 m.2 card and try. here is the link to pictures. https://goo.gl/photos/4nP3bectYpTy3goTA What do you guys think?

  19. Well guys somethings just not right with my mini, I upgraded the ram to crucial 8gb per their website for compatibility, did a trascend 128 ssd, followed our above directions using the clone tool, all seemed to take and work well so I thought.

I realized as I started to use the pc that it was not installing basic programs and apps correctly, windows update wasn't working either, I tried making a restore usb and it won't even create one said there is a problem creating the restore usb (fresh 16gb formatted drive empty), even tried a second fresh 32gb usb formatted drive still no luck.

So I can't seem to get windows to go back to a previous time or create and run a restore usb, i may pull this 128 drive put the small original drive in and see if i can't create the restore usb from that original drive heck idk, but at this point I am kinda stuck on what to do or try next. Stuff just isn't installing/working right updates won't work either, and I am sort of stumped as to why or how to really go about fixing it all - bummed.

everything is working fine again glad to report :)

  20. I also installed a Micron M600 SSD (mine was 256GB) from Micro Center. As the previous comments mentioned, it did not seem to install with UEFI and Secure Boot on. It would do the original part of the install, but at reboot, it would hang at the Dell logo.

I did a lot of research on the Crucial forums and elsewhere; other people had similar problems, with no solution. (The equivalent Crucial drive appears to be the MX200.) The firmware is up to date: version MU05.

I finally installed with "LEGACY" support. I was able to use AHCI from the start. I used the Windows Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB drive; it starts with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

I later realized I did not try UEFI with Secure Boot off, but the current installation is actually more convenient, since it makes it easy to boot from an external disk (I have Ubuntu on on USB3 external drive).

I first thought the 2260-size M600 would not fit. The original SSD is a 2242 size. However, there is a small plastic clip on the motherboard, and two holes conveniently labeled "Short SSD" and "Long SSD". The clip has a split peg going through the hole. I pushed on one side of the peg on the bottom of the board with a small screwdriver, and it came out easily.

Don't forget to download a few missing and updated drivers from the Dell support site.

  21. I am really lost at this point, guessing stick old small ssd in see if i can create a usb recovery from that, put the bigger drive back in and try that? The legacy stuff and whatnot i have no clue what it even means, this is the first win10 machine I have owned very different animal I was just starting to learn my way around it when I realized some things like update and programs weren't working right so guess I am back to square one heck idk i didn't do much at all with the original drive and it filled up FAST, so I am really stumped as to what to do, retry the steps above heck idk.

  24. Hello All, Just purchased this device as a leftover from an electronics store locally. I ordered 8gb RAM online and waiting for it to be delivered. I was able to uninstall some Dell bloatware, and I have 5gb available on the 32gb drive it came with. I don't plan on loading much software, I'll be using the web and streaming mostly, but I'd like a little more space on the C drive without replacing it. What i'd like to do is remove the recovery partition from the hard drive, that would give back almost 8gb to the C partition. Does anyone know if that can be done safely... and how to do it? Thanks!!
